Ashesi Canvas Digest · Last updated 1 October 2026
Ashesi Canvas Digest is an independent, unofficial browser extension. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Ashesi University or Instructure (the makers of Canvas).
Your coursework stays in your browser. Nothing is uploaded anywhere unless you turn AI assistance on yourself, and even then only the specific excerpts shown to you before they are sent. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising, and nothing is sold.
What the extension handles
Your Canvas coursework. Assignments, due dates, submission status, course material, announcements, syllabi and inbox message previews. These are read from ashesi.instructure.com using the Canvas session you are already signed in to, over read-only requests. The extension never submits work, posts replies, marks messages read, or changes any Canvas setting.
Your name and Canvas user ID. Shown in the interface, and used as the key that keeps one person's saved work separate from another's on a shared browser profile.
Your own study data. Tasks, notes, bookmarks, review schedules, saved analyses and your AI preferences. You create all of it; it is stored locally.
Your Canvas password — only if you use the optional Connect form. It is typed directly into the Canvas login form in your own browser tab. It is held in the popup's memory for the few seconds the sign-in attempt takes, and is never written to disk, never logged, and never sent anywhere except Canvas itself. It is gone when the popup closes. You can avoid this entirely by signing in to Canvas directly and using Sync Canvas.
A random install ID. A random identifier created on your device so the AI proxy can rate-limit abuse. It is not an account, is not linked to you, and carries no personal data.
Where it is stored
Everything above stays in your browser profile, in Chrome's extension storage. Canvas snapshots and loaded source text are session-scoped and cleared when you disconnect or switch accounts. Your personal study work persists until you delete it.
There is no server-side database of users. The extension does not synchronise between your devices.
Local storage is not encryption. Anyone else using the same browser profile can read it. Use Settings → Delete my local study data before leaving a shared computer.
When data leaves your device
Only for AI analysis, and only after you enable it.
AI is off by default, behind three independent switches in workspace Settings: AI assistance, inbox analysis, and automatic analysis. Inbox content requires its own permission on top of AI assistance.
When you run an analysis, the selected excerpts — and nothing else — are sent to a proxy operated by this project, which forwards them to DeepSeek, the AI provider. The proxy holds the API key so it never ships inside the extension; it does not persist or log the content it forwards. You can inspect exactly which excerpts will be sent before sending them, in the source inspector on each study screen.
Your personal notes are never included unless you type them into a question yourself.
DeepSeek processes the content it receives under its own policies, which this extension cannot control. Decide for yourself whether private messages or unpublished material are appropriate to send.
What the extension does not do
- No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting or usage tracking.
- No advertising, and no profiling.
- Nothing is sold or shared with data brokers.
- No data is used for creditworthiness or lending.
- No automatic uploads — every transmission follows an action you took.
Deleting your data
- Settings → Delete my local study data removes your tasks, notes, saved analyses, reviews and AI preferences for that Canvas account.
- Settings → Export personal data takes a copy first, if you want one.
- Disconnect clears cached Canvas session data but deliberately keeps your personal work.
- Removing the extension from Chrome deletes everything it stored.
Files you export yourself stay wherever you saved them.
